It's no secret that passive management was not just the buzz word of the last several years, but a full-on movement.  Headlines speak of investors flocking to passively managed funds amid mounting fees and diminished returns; but has active management really declined?

Bloomberg and the Hedge Fund Association are pleased to post panels with some of the most influential minds from across the investment community as we seek to answer this question. We will discuss the impact passive management has had and the role that active management still plays.

Discussion topics include:
  • What has changed for active management since the financial crisis and the onset of passive management?
  • How are the active managers differentiating and adapting in this environment?
  • How do allocators view this new paradigm and what are the strategies they believe are poised to flourish?
This event is exclusively reserved for current HFA members and those currently employed on the buy side.  All registrations are subject to review and approval.

ASK 2015

As the Korean Government (FSS) and institutional investors are embracing hedge funds for alternative solution to fixed income (80% of portfolio) substitute by bringing stable, consistent, and absolute returns regardless of market environments, a significant portion of an approx. USD $2 trillion investable asset is waiting to be allocated to global hedge funds.

NPS ($435 bn) has announced their global hedge fund investment in 2015 and can play a leading catalyst role for the rest of Korean institutional investors.

The ASK 2015 Hedge Fund Summit is a meeting point and communication hub for both global fund managers and Korean institutional investors who are looking for overseas investment opportunities. The total AUM of Korean institutions will grow from USD 2tn to approx. 5tn over the next 30 years.

The domestic market cannot provide sufficient attractive investment opportunities due to stagnant economic growth and an aging society. Korean institutions are actively looking for return enhancement and diversification opportunities from the overseas market in real estate, infrastructure, private equity, private debt, hedge funds etc.

Finding alternatives to fixed income is the key theme of the summit as Korean institutions are allocating 60-80% to fixed income with low return. They are looking for solutions to diversify risk and enhance return.

As most Korean investors are still at the early stage of overseas investment, this summit program provides an overview of various strategies and regions for both private debt, equity, infrastructure and hedge funds.

ASK is well regarded for its high attendance from Korean investors. Last May there were 646 participants including 338 investors and 308 global managers and others.

Keynote Speech:
NPS (National Pension Service) &
KIC (Korea Investment Corporation)

Korea Participants:

Email: akostov@thehfa.org

The Hedge Fund Association is pleased to support the Hedge Fund Standards Board’s Institutional Investor Roundtable in Sydney, Australia, hosted by Bloomberg, as part of the 2015 Global Series.

The Hedge Fund Standards Board is a standard setting body for the global hedge fund industry, which brings together investors and managers from around the world to promote high standards of practice in the industry. It is custodian of the Hedge Fund Standards which: (a) provide a mechanism for promoting transparency, integrity and governance; (b) facilitate investor due diligence; (c) help safeguard the reputation of the industry; (d) complement public policy.

The HFSB carries out its mission of promoting high standards by:

  • Collaborating with managers and investors to create an “eco-system” where users and providers come together to agree the Standards for the hedge fund industry and how it should operate.
  • Regularly reviewing the Standards to ensure that they remain relevant and in tune with the evolution of the industry.
  • Actively engaging with the governmental/supervisory community so that regulation reflects how the industry works and the Standards reflect public policy requirements.
This roundtable will focus on:
  • Institutional investor priorities for 2015
  • Critical assessment of institutional risk management techniques
